Design Project Part 1

3 Techniques 3 Affordances

For your design project you will start by producing three formal diagrams based on three different techniques we covered in class. Each diagram will create three affordances in one formal exploration.

The 3 techniques are:

Tiling technique, based on tutorial 5, but the tiling must be a based on a non- periodic pattern.

Animated form technique, based on tutorial 6, but this must deal with continuous surfaces.

Blended form technique based on tutorial 7, this diagram needs to deal with both structure and space.

Each formal diagram should be an original form- not a retooling of the tutorials. Each formal diagram should embody three affordances- expressed by using the 3D people.
These are systems you are designing and not things. You should not try to create a composition of parts, but rather a system based on an aggregation. You need to define this system with a set of rules. But the rules of the system are evolving and often discovered in the process of making. So work with a clear goal, but allow yourself room to improve the system you’re designing as you find your abilities to control the techniques improving.

Deliverables:
You will need to upload 3 process images on the blog (one of each diagram) on
7/03/10, and than again on 7/10/10. During these class periods we will be working in class and have one on one desk critiques. These are process diagrams but they need to be clear, include 3D people and show intent of the affordance being explored.

**For inspiration you should be particularly looking at the projects you and others summarized in the homework assignments, and look at the diagram on page 199 of Catalytic Formations.
